2023 Eagle Area Trail Maintenance Projects Haymaker Berms and Lower Pool and Ice Town of Eagle Open Space and Trails
As you may have already noticed, sections of the Pool and Ice and Haymaker trails received a facelift this year. The Town of Eagle Open Space and Trails Department (Town) partnered with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Momentum Trail Concepts to complete some much-needed trail maintenance and minor reroutes on the berm sections of both trails.
Overall, the new maintenance and minor reroutes will decrease the riding speed, which will help reduce brake bumps and heavy wear on the trail. This will ultimately improve the sustainability of both trails.
In 2022, the Town completed its first-ever Open Space and Trails Master Plan (OSTMP). Development of the plan included significant community and stakeholder engagement along with an evaluation of natural resources and trails in the Eagle area. The OSTMP highlighted the lower section of Pool and Ice and the Haymaker Berms as degraded sections of trail in need of significant maintenance and/or reroutes to improve sustainability and the user experience.
To address these issues, the Town released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for maintenance focused on improving sustainability and the user experience on both trails. Project goals included reducing brake bumps, decreasing long-term maintenance requirements, and providing a fun user experience, all while not changing the overall character/ difficulty of the trail.
The improved trail sections now feature the following:
- More sustainable berms – the new larger berms were built to slow erosion over time. The larger berms also have a wider riding surface to spread wear and tear throughout the trail.
- More turns and grade reversals- Decreasing strait-aways in the trail will ensure water does not run down the trail surface, and the features slow the speeds down on the trail.
