Eagle seasonal trail closures end April 15 (trails open April 16) and our amazing backyard is open for your adventures! But the local elk and deer are just getting ready to give birth so now more than ever we need to help them out a little. As our trails open, new seasonal trail closures start up Valley to protect these animals as they move to their historic birthing grounds. Let us tell you a few things that make the elk so mighty.
Their gestation period can last 245 days. Babies can weigh up to 40 pounds. That means they spend all those days carrying that weight up and down mountainsides as they forage, avoid predators, and keep up with the herd. But the story doesn't end when they give birth! Mothers then lose a tremendous amount of weight each day as they nurse. As you can imagine, pregnant and nursing mothers are especially vulnerable. Harassing wildlife endangers these mothers as well as the long-term health of the herd. It's all the more reason to give these impressive mothers the space they deserve. If you're ready to commit to protecting wildlife, take our pledge. You'll be contributing to animal safety, this is the last day to enter to win prizes so don't delay.
