As the holiday season approaches, it’s the perfect time to celebrate while keeping sustainability in mind. Proper recycling can reduce waste and protect our environment, but knowing what can and cannot be recycled during the holidays is crucial. Here’s a quick guide:
What You Can Recycle:
- Wrapping Paper: Non-metallic wrapping paper only (no bows or ribbons).
- Tissue Paper: All colors are acceptable.
- Gift Bags: Paper gift bags with paper handles, as long as they’re not coated.
- Envelopes: Regular mail envelopes are recyclable, and plastic windows or stamps don’t need to be removed.
- Cardboard: Perfect for recycling after unwrapping gifts!
- Aluminum Foil & Baking Pans: Must be clean; ball foil up for easy recycling.
What You Cannot Recycle:
- Christmas Lights: Take these to Trinity or Eagle County Hazardous Waste facilities.
- Glass Ornaments: Not recyclable; consider reusing or donating.
- Styrofoam, Packing Peanuts, and Plastic Packaging: These belong in the trash.
- Batteries: Drop off at Ace Hardware or Eagle County Hazardous Waste.
- Shredded Paper: Difficult to process; consider composting instead.
- Napkins, Paper Towels, or Compostable Plates and Utensils: Only BPI-certified compostable items belong in compost bins.
